Dimitri

"Are you fucking nuts?!”

Ciaran’s voice was so loud Dimitri was tempted to cover his ears. Thankfully, Hope put a hand on his arm, and Ciaran backed off to a dim roar.

“There’s no way. We’re too well known in the community.”

“I disguise myself. Aside from my hair, I don’t have any identifying features.”

Hope turned away from her husband and faced Dimitri.

“Your scent. How will you change that?” She asked.

Hope had a good point. Dimitri was a demon, and like all others, his scent indicated his race. Most demons couldn’t place his heritage, but that was suspicious enough. Dimitri hadn’t thought of a solution to that. The only thing that had mattered was finding Red.

“I’ll figure it out.”

“You’ll figure it out. No, Dimitri. You can’t expect us to support you, let alone help you infiltrate Roger’s mercenaries, without a plan.”

Hope could barely keep her voice level as she scoffed and paced across the room. The kitchen had somehow become the fallout zone. Whenever there was a big conversation, everyone met in the kitchen. Dimitri couldn’t imagine actually eating breakfast or dinner there now. Dimitri wanted to be upstairs and out of Ciaran’s lair, looking for Red.

“Well?” Ciaran raised his brow at Dimitri and bit his jaws together.

“You’re right,” Hope stopped her pacing to look at Dimitri, “We need more of a plan. I’m not good at that shit, but I know our only way in is through the mercenaries. So, thoughts?”

Ciaran looked at Hope, and they seemed to talk without words. They were a flurry of nods and rolled eyes and pointing fingers. Dimitri swallowed down a lump in his throat that bubbled up, watching them. Again, Hope spoke for the couple.

“You need to be stronger. You have to heal up, so the crew will let you in. And most importantly, you need to get your gift under control. If you are seen using it, no one will believe you’re just a lackey.”

Dimitri considered the unspoken words. Hope, and Ciaran, by proxy, told him this would take time. Damn both of them for their fucking logic. They don’t remember how hard this is. Ugh, if I have to watch one more fucking staring contest between them...

Now Dimitri was the one pacing. The dark tiles winked at him as he passed in and out of the overhead light. His shadow fell on the stainless-steel fridge, and a strange memory slammed into his brain. Staring at the icebox, Dimitri’s heart jackhammered, and the kitchen fell away. A shadow was framed in a door, and Dimitri heard a voice cry, “No.” A heavy weight hit his chest and stomach, and then he was on his knees.

His friends were around when the kitchen came back into focus.

“What the hell was that?!” Ciaran’s voice was too loud.

“Ciaran, keep it down.” Hope was better, but it was still too much.

Dimitri’s tongue turned into thick sandpaper. Gods, talking was tricky as hell.

“I… not sure… A dream, I think. I remembered, ugh, a dream.”

Dimitri’s eye burned, and a random jolt from his nerves made him see the shadow again.
